There is no interior decoration as functional as a houseplant. Adding some greenery to your home can really brighten a space, but also help to purify the air to help you relax and de-stress. We have rounded up four of the best houseplants that are both easy to care for and effective at clearing out the toxins for cleaner indoor air.

Rubber plant

If you are quite forgetful when it comes to keeping your plants watered then a rubber plant might be the right choice for you. They are incredibly easy to care for and will continue to thrive even in dim lighting and cooler temperatures. Rubber trees do not only make a welcome addition to your home; they are the most economically important member of the genus Hevea.

Snake plant

Commonly called a snake plant because of the shape of its leaves, these do not require much water or light to stay alive. For that reason, they are good for placing in the corners of your home that might require some interest. Unlike most plants, the snake plant absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen during the night so adding one to your bedroom will give you that boost of clean air you need to get a good night’s sleep.

Golden pothos

This little plant is so good at clearing formaldehyde from the air that it makes the NASA Clean Air Study list. It is best to be added as hanging plant in your kitchen as the leaves grow down in cascading vines, creating a seasonal look all year round. This is another plant that grows well in low levels of sunlight and cool temperatures.

Peace lily

If it’s something with a flower you are looking for, a peace lily is a beautifully simple one to keep in the home. This clever plant communicates how it is feeling through its body language. If its soil is too dry, its stems will droop, but once you have given it some water, it will be lively again in an hour or so. These plants also do well in the shade and cooler climates and can help to reduce the amount of toxins in the air. A peace lily’s simple flower will work well with all interiors and will look particularly at home in a bright bathroom.
